He lives here -- Garry is one of the few candidates in this election who actually lives in the Ward.  His children go to school here. He attends church here. He has been elected to represent parents here as the Ward representative for the Catholic Parent Involvement Committee (CPIC). Because he lives here, he knows what the trustee needs to know.

Already Working Hard in Ward 8 -- Catholic ratepayers in Ward 8 should vote for Garry he has been working with parents, administrators, and ratepayers in Ward 8 elementary and high schools for the last 4 years through CPIC.  He proposed and launched the Parent Ambassador Network (PAN) program that is designed to engage and involve parents in their integral role of nurturing our Catholic community in the relationship between home, school and parish.  Elect someone already working hard for parents and students.

Garry will defend Catholic Education -- The existence and identity of Catholic education is being threatened today. Garry Tanuan will promote our legal rights to an authentic and fully-funded Catholic School system. Here are solutions to problems we are facing.

Threat #1: The funding of Catholic education is being questioned.

From public opinion polls to political leaders, many people are calling for an end to the Constitutional right to the public funding of Catholic schools. A May 2012 survey by Forum Research showed that 53% of Ontario residents were against Catholic education continuing to be subsidized by our taxes.

Garry Tanuan will work to protect the right to a fully-funded Catholic education.

Threat #2: The government is undermining the meaning of Catholic education.

Last spring the provincial government passed anti-bullying legislation called Bill 13, “The Accepting Schools Act”. This law makes it illegal for Catholic schools to refuse setting up Gay Straight Alliance clubs (GSAs) if a student requests one. The Church’s solution to bullying is being ignored and Church teaching is being undermined by these clubs. Cardinal Collins put it this way: “So the key issue is not just the (GSA) name itself, but the content connected with the name”. The Cardinal continued: “To the members of our Catholic community: I urge you to reflect on the implications for Catholic education of this sudden government change in policy…” In the meantime, the bishops and trustees of Ontario designed “Respecting Differences” (“RD”) clubs as a solution for all bullying issues. “RD” clubs respect the teachings of the Catholic Church.

Garry Tanuan will promote “RD” clubs as the solution for bullying issues and fight for our Constitutional rights to a meaningful Catholic education.

Threat #3: The Minister of Education states that Bill 13 outlaws Catholic teaching!

Laurel Broten in October 2012 told reporters that Catholic teaching against abortion is illegal because “Bill 13 is about tackling misogyny.” She continued:

“We’re very clear with the passage of Bill-13 that Catholic teachings cannot be taught in our schools… Taking away a woman’s right to choose could arguably be one of the most misogynistic actions.”

At the “Cardinal’s Dinner” the next evening, Archbishop Thomas Collins stated:

“It is our mission to speak up for all those who suffer, and especially those who ae voiceless, for those who are forgotten. We all have a stake in assuring that the faith identity of Catholic schools is respected.”

Garry Tanuan will fight against the government trying to undermine the identity of our Catholic schools by promoting the teachings of the Catholic Church in our schools.
